Gap:
Most academic programs have an individual disciplinary or subject-matter focus. Few programs actively involve development of teamwork and leadership competencies. Experiential learning to raise awareness and expand understanding of the inter-related roles of government, industry and civil society are uncommon.

GIFSL potential:

1. Capture best practices from successful leadership programs and incorporate these practices into food systems educational programs in educational institutions.
2. Develop experiential learning programs and foster their delivery as an integral part of formal academic programs.
2. Link academic credentialing to the capacity-building efforts of international organizations.
